William de Morgan 'Fantastic beasts' tile panel, circa 1895 Ceramic tile, ruby lustre glaze. Tile panel: 27.5 cm x 47.8 cm (two 8 x 8 in tiles) Possibly designed by Halsey Ricardo. Footnotes: Literature Jon Catleugh, William De Morgan Tiles, Trefoil Books, London, 1983, p. 167, no. 261 for similar tile illustrated, noted as 'Red lustre, probably designed by Halsey Ricardo. Craven Dunhill blank.'. Halsey Ricardo (1854-1928), architect and designer, was William De Morgan's business partner between 1888-1898.
