Dill has been crafting light and earthly materials like concrete, glass, sand, and metal into luminous sculptures, wall pieces, and installations since the 1970's. Referring to his choice of materials, Dill explains, 'I was lucky enough to be able to work with Robert Rauschenberg, Robert Irwin, and Jasper Johns at Gemini G.E.L who were working with earth materials, light, and space as an alternative to traditional painting and sculpture.' When Dill does use canvas, he paints with pigments derived from cement and natural oxides. Dill has exhibited his Light Sentences and Light Plains sculptures in institutions across the U.S.A and globally, and a resurgence of interest in these pieces has occurred in the last decade as well. Dill's first solo exhibition in New York was with Ileana Sonnabend Gallery in 1971, and his work is in the permanent collections of national and international institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the High Museum, Atlanta; The Philips Collection and the Smithsonian, Washington DC; the Chicago Art Institute, Illinois; the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Denmark; Pio Monte Della Misericordia, Italy; the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego; the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; and the Museo Jumex, Mexico. He currently works in the West Adams District of Los Angeles, California where he maintains a studio. Dill is the recipient of two National Endowment grants: one for sculpture and one for painting, and a Guggenheim Fellowship for painting. He has also received the lifetime achievement grant and award from the Pollock Krasner Foundation. He has taught extensively at UCLA, UC Irvine, Art Center in Pasadena, and lectured in numerous universities and art institutions across the United States. Basically, what you see is what you get.
