Verre à vin armorié et gravé, Angleterre, fin XVIIIe siècle An unusual English engraved armorial wine or ale glass, late 18th century The conical bowl cut with flutes to the lower part extending into a short stem, decorated with the individual crowned coats of arms of England, Ireland, Scotland and France, titled 'ANG', 'HIB', 'SCO' and 'FRA' respectively, set between festoons of fruit and flowers suspended from tied ribbons with pendant bunches of grapes, the conical foot with a belt inscribed with the motto of the Order of the Garter, 16.2cm high Footnotes: Provenance: Christian von Reitzenstein Collection King George III dropped the claim to the defunct French throne following the Act of Union in 1800, which joined the Kingdom of Great Britain with the Kingdom of Ireland to a new United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Prior to this British monarchs had also styled themselves as rulers of France, hence the inclusion here of the arms of France.
