A Flight, Barr and Barr Worcester armorial part dessert service, circa 1820-25 Comprising a large shaped square comport, two shaped oval dishes, a shaped square dish and seven dessert plates, with gilt gadrooned rims, wide claret borders with raised gilt scrollwork enclosing a crest of an eagle's head erased, the motto NON DEGENER above, comport 30cm wide, plates 22.2cm, impressed FBB marks, some pieces also with red script mark referring to Coventry Street address (11) Footnotes: Provenance Charles Dawson Collection The crest and motto are for the Scottish clan Wedderburn. The Jacobite Sir John Wedderburn, 5th Baronet of Blackness was executed after his role at the Battle of Culloden in 1746. This dessert service was most likely made for his descendent Sir James Wedderburn-Webster (1788-1840), as the sole heir of the family arms and the only person entitled to use the motto. Wedderburn-Webster and his wife Lady Frances Wedderburn-Webster lived reasonably scandalous lives. Both were closely associated with Lord Byron, with whom Frances reportedly had an affair. Byron nicknamed his friend James 'Bold Webster'. He was present at the battle of Waterloo in 1815 and both James and Frances attended the famous Duke of Richmond's Ball on the eve of battle, where Frances was seated beside the Duke of Wellington at supper.
