ORDERING ADDITIONAL MASSACHUSETTS TROOPS FOR THE SOUTHERN CAMPAIGN. With British forces refocusing the war to the south, including the fall of Charleston, General Washington issued a call for more troops from the individual colonies. In response, the Massachusetts House of Representatives passed this resolution instituting a draft, in order to muster exactly 5,117 men. '...Though we have much to fear from indecision, yet we have every thing to hope from exertion -- nothing less than, at one stroke, to put a period to the war; for we have the fullest assurances of such aid from our illustrious Ally, as was never before on these shores....' The 'illustrious ally' was the French fleet which would join Washington's armies in the journey to Yorktown in August, 1781, culminating in the American victory, and the eventual British withdrawal.
