A French red Moroccan leather and gilt tooled letter-case and associated blotter Late 17th / early 18th century The case stamped in gilt 'M le Duc de Melfort Brigadier des Armées du Roy Mestre Decamp Commandant du Regiment de Bassigny', and opening to reveal a divided blue silk lined interior, the Moroccan leather blotter with similar gilt decoration, 43cm wide, 3cm deep, 31cm high (16 1/2in wide, 1in deep, 12in high) and 28cm wide x 40.5cm high, (2) Footnotes: Provenance Christie's, London, Christie's Interiors - Style & Spirit, 24 February 2009, Lot 664. John Drummond (1650-1715), 1st Earl of Melfort, was the second son of James Drummond, 3rd Earl of Perth. He was a staunch supporter of and close advisor to James VII & II, and was made Earl of Melfort in 1686. His support of the Jacobite claim ultimately led to his exile in France in 1688 following the Glorious Revolution. The family used the title 'Duc de Melfort' in exile. His son John served as Major-General in the Jacobite army of 1715, and several further descendants served in the French military. Purchased by the present 19th Earl of Perth.
