A 19th century Meissen biscuit porcelain bust of Johann Wolfgang Goethe Modelled full face with curling hair, his bare shoulders on integral rectangular herm base, the front inscribed GOETHE, the underside of the base to the rear with underglaze blue printed factory, 23.5cm high, 15.5cm high, 9.5cm deep Footnotes: Provenance Property of a Gentleman Collector. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was a key figure in the Grand Tour tradition, having undertaken his journey between 1786 and 1788. His travels served as a personal education and significantly influenced how later generations viewed Italy and the Grand Tour. Goethe's journey reflected the classic custom of young men of high social standing traveling through Europe, especially Italy, to study art, culture, and history. For Goethe, the experience was transformative, deepening his understanding of classical antiquity, art, and the Italian landscape, which shaped his writing and perspective. His detailed account, Italian Journey, provided valuable insights into 18th-century Italy and the Grand Tour experience. Goethe's approach influenced subsequent travelers and writers, particularly through his fascination with the Roman Campagna and classical ruins. This work remained an important piece of travel literature, highlighting both the cultural landscape of the time and Goethe's intellectual development.
