h cm 66 x l cm 60 Depicting King Umberto I and his consort Margherita of Savoy. Both busts stand out for their extraordinary execution, from the meticulous rendering of the faces and the details of the attire, to the modeling of the drapery and ornaments, demonstrating the hand of a sculptor of exceptional skill. The stylistic and qualitative affinity with royal commissions, in particular with the school of Carmine Genua—of whom a very similar bust of Umberto I is preserved at the Royal Castle of Turin—suggests a production context close to the environments of the Savoy court, making the pair not only a significant example of official portraiture of the period, but also an object of great rarity within the field of monarchic portraiture in Italy. The coexistence of the two busts, conceived as a pair, is exceptional, reflecting the intent to celebrate both the sovereign and the queen. Provenance: From an important private collection.
