Seitdem bekommen alle Spieler einer Mannschaft und die Trainer eine Siegermedaille. Beim FIFA-Kongress im Jahr 2007 wurde beschlossen, diese Benachteiligung der leer ausgegangenen Spieler zu beseitigen und zumindest den Fußball - Weltmeistern von 1934 bis 1970 nachträglich eine Medaille zu verleihen. Der Auftrag für die Produktion dieser Medaillen wurde an den schweizer Medailleur Huguenin-Freres übergegeben. Im Jahr 2009 wurden jeweils ca. 11 Medaillen an die Weltmeisterverbände ausgeliefert. In England wurde im Jahr 2009 eine Zeremonie durchgeführt, bei der der englische Premierminister Gordon Brown den englischen Spielern, die 1966 keine Siegermedaille erhielten, diese Goldmedaille aus dem Jahr 2009 feierlich überreichte. Jimmy Greaves verkaufte seine Medaille im Jahr 2009 erhaltene Medaille am 11.11.2014 im Auktionshaus Sotheby für 44.000 GBP. Im Jahr 2014 wurde die Medaille von Gerry Byrne und des Co-Trainers Harold Stepherdson zum Kauf angeboten. Die Preise für WM 1966 Memorabilia sind erfahrungsgemäß in England extrem hoch. Es ist leider nichts belegt wie die Verbände von Italien, Brasilien, Uruguay und Deutschland mit diesen Medaillen verfahren sind, d.h. ob diese Medaillen an die noch lebenden Spielern ausgegeben wurden und wie mit den Medaillen der verstorbenen Spieler verfahren wurde. Es ist weiterhin davon auszugehen, dass zahlreiche Medaillen aufgrund des hohen Goldwertes (ca. 75 Gramm reines Gold) eingeschmolzen wurden. Diese Medaillen sind deshalb seltener als die bei den jeweiligen Siegerehrungen ausgegebenen Medaillen.
