A PAIR OF FAMILLE VERTE BISCUIT FIGURES OF THE HEHE ERXIAN Kangxi Crisply modelled and brightly coloured in ochre, green and brown, each group with the two boys seated on a deeply pierced rockwork base, each holding an appropriate attribute, one with a green robe, the other in yellow. The largest 14cm (5 1/2in) high. (2). Footnotes: 清康熙 素三彩和合二仙像 兩件 Provenance: Vanderven Oriental Art, s-Hertogenbosch, purchased on 26 June 2005 (smaller one) Seidel und Sohn, Berlin, purchased on 20 October 2006 (larger one) A European private collection The two groups of figures represented here are the Hehe Erxian, the 'Immortals of Harmony and Union' and relate to two legendary monks (Hanshan 寒山 and Shide 拾得) of the Tang dynasty. They have been regarded as symbols of happiness and harmony. Compare with a similar famille verte model of Hehe Erxian, 17th/18th century, illustrated in Porcelain and Architectural Ceramics from China 1400 to 1900, Köln, 2015, pl.91. See also a similar famille verte model of the Hehe Erxian, Kangxi, illustrated by A.du Boulay, Christie's Pictorial History of Chinese Ceramics, Oxford, 1984, p.288, fig.2. See also a very similar sancai-glazed group of the Hehe Erxian, Kangxi, illustrated by W.R.Sargent, The Copeland Collection: Chinese and Japanese Ceramic Figures , Salem, 1991, pp.70-71, no.25.
