AN ARCHIVE OF MANUSCRIPTS, PHOTOGRAPHS AND EPHEMERA RELATING TO DETAILS MAGAZINE, FROM THE COLLECTION OF ANNIE FLANDERS. Including: Box 1 (red): A large collection of press clippings for Details, including early reviews ( 'one of those trendy fashion/lifestyle rags for the trendy Danceteria set'; clipping service articles, 1982-88; and NY Times press on the sale of the mag to Sy Newhouse in 1988, approx. 200 pages, with print copies of New York Press, Village Voice, LA Weekly, City Choice, Soho News. Box 2 (Accordion folder): a Details baseball cap and promotional match books; tickets to April 19, 1988 Details fashion show; a wide variety of party invitations from the magazine, including first anniversary of publication. Box 3 (Perrier Jouet box):; 11 bamboo-handled silk-and-wire fans, stamped 'Details fan,' swag from fashion show, with 8 x 10 in photo of two women and a truck, inscribed to Annie Flanders, 1988. Box 4 (black clamshell box): file of fan mail, 1982-88; uncut signatures of issue #1; color slides of fashion show including appearance by Sharon Stone and Ivana Trump; 3 pp typed memo from Alan on upcoming issue content; 3 contact proofs; large format black and white portrait of Annie Flanders; Details jacket pins; a collection of 4 x 5 inch color negatives; Details advertiser cards; and early cover design sketches and alternate designs. Box 5: Collection of snapshots and polaroids of Annie Flanders with celebs like Cyndi Lauper and Bella Abzug; Cookie Muller's eulogy; correspondence from celebrities such as S.I. Newhouse (1988-89), Perry Ellis, Sally Jesse Raphael, Norma Kamala, Susan Powter, Michael Musto, Kenneth Cole, Holly Solomon, Mel Shestack, Liz Smith, and Hal Rubenstein;15 issues of Details, July 1982 to Nov 1989 (not continuous), each issue tabbed by Flanders with notes on production, some period, others later in preparation for biographical work. Box 6 (Banker's box): 3 files of autobiographical material on Marcia Weinraub/Annie Flanders, including early clipping of Marcia winning Miss NYU beauty contest; various drafts of biographical statements, 1980s; her c.1981 resume; approx. 25 handwritten pages of bio, plus typed versions; notebooks, clippings, etc. Much of it organized in preparation for 'An Evening With Annie Flanders' presentation at the Boston MFA, May 17, 2012. WITH: original cover art template, 30 x 24 inches (760 x 610 mm), used through April 1986 before the introduction of color. Footnotes: Marcia Weinraub (1939-2022) was born in the Bronx. As a young woman, she studied fashion and journalism at NYU (and won the 1959 Miss NYU pageant!) before launching a career as buyer for various department stores. In 1967 she opened her own store on the upper east side, Abracadabra, a funky boutique specializing in new and avant-garde designers. She met Chris Flanders, an actor, and though they never married, she took his last name and also changed her first name when he suggested she was more of an 'Annie' than a 'Marcia.' Abracadabra ran for a few years, then Flanders moved to Ethiopia to oversee a leather manufacturing enterprise. In 1976 she was hired as the Fashion Editor for the Soho Weekly News, a newspaper designed to rival the more popular and famous Village Voice. The Soho News shut down in 1982, and with $6000 of her own money, Flanders started Details with many of her Soho News staffers. Details was to be a diary not just of a neighborhood, but of the whole city--its nightlife, restaurants, art, music and fashion scenes. It's motto? 'A party in a magazine.' The magazine published monthly (rather than weekly, like the Soho News) and featured photography from some of the most important photographers working at the time: Bruce Weber, Steven Meisel, Amy Arbus, Patrick McMullan—and Flanders' very close friend, Bill Cunningham. Cunningham is best known for his long association with the New York Times but Flanders first gave him the most freedom of any editor. Details caught on with its audience but never found financial stability. Flanders sold out to an investor in 1986, who then sold the magazine on to S.I. Newhouse in 1988. She remained as Editor-in-Chief for a short period before being pushed out altogether. Then, the publisher made the head-scratching decision to turn Details into a men's magazine before the entire project was shut down in 2015. Flanders' post-Details career included co-sponsoring the Love Balls of 1989 and 1991, and a later move to Los Angeles where she continued to write and consult until her death in 2022.
