AN INLAID LACQUER SUZURIBAKO (WRITING BOX) Edo period (1615-1868), 18th century The gourd-shaped box with an inrÅbuta (flush-fitting) lid decorated with a pair of long-armed gibbons hanging from the stem of the gourd and leafy training vines in inlaid pewter, iridescent shell, and gold hiramaki-e, the interior with young ferns in inlays of silver and shell on a fundame ground, fitted with a circular inkstone, the water dropper now lost 10 x 8 3/4 x 1 1/2in (25.4 x 22.2 x 3.8cm) Footnotes: Published Stephen Little and Edmund J.
