ARCHIVE OF EUGENE O'NEILL MANUSCRIPTS AND TYPESCRIPTS. O'NEILL, EUGENE. 1888-1953. This lot features a collection O'Neill manuscripts from the estate of Jane Caldwell Bohaker, O'Neill's San Francisco typist. Jane Caldwell was the daughter of an old school friend of Carlotta O'Neill who was hired by the writer as a typist in the final years of his life, and for whom the playwright developed a fondness. The archive includes: 1.Autograph Manuscript Signed ('Gene'), in pencil, a poem titled 'To a Stolen Moment,' 2 pp, 4to, n.p., June 29, 1945, on 3-hole foolscap, page wrinkled and toned. A lyrical poem that includes the lines: 'There was you and magic there / And years and sickness and fears / were spray tossed in the foam / And thrown seaward any where / I with you / The magic of love was there / For me / And you / Standing there.' 2.Typescript, fragment of A Moon for the Misbegotten,' comprising typed pages and carbons of pages 9, 10, 14, 16, 17, 38, 39, 40, 43 and a second page 43 with different content, 20 pages in total (10 unique pages). 3.Autograph Manuscript, 1 p, 8vo, correction for a line of Josie's dialogue for p 23 of A Moon for the Misbegotten draft. 4.Autograph Note Signed ('Gene'), to Jane Bohaker? Presenting a gift to her, n.d.: 'Please don't be foolish about enclosed from me. Frame it or give to Home for the Broken Hearted but keep it. / Give back only a few sheets of carbon copy. Say that is all....' 5.Autograph Manuscript in pencil, p 90 of A Touch of the Poet, n.p., n.d., on 3-hole foolscap, creased and torn but now professionally repaired. 6.Typed Manuscript, select pages from Acts I, II and III of A Touch of the Poet, some reproduced in duplicate, most pages on 3-hole foolscap, light toning. Title page, scene list, character list, pp 1-8, 9, 12, 13, 26, 27, 34, 35, 45, 66, 73, 79 and 81. Carbons for all pages except title page and pp 1, 9, 12, and 13 are present. 7.Typescript with annotations, pp 2, 4, 11 and 15 of Hughie, n.p., c.1942, on three hole typing paper, minor annotations by O'Neill in black ink throughout, pages toned and creased. Annotated pages from O'Neill's one-act play that takes place in a Manhattan hotel lobby in the summer of 1928. 8.Typescript, 'Last Will and Testament of Silverdene Emblem O'Neill,' 3 pp, 4to, Tao House, December 17, 1940, pages fastened at upper margin with cello tape, offset from tape, some thumbing. O'Neill's poignant 'will' for his beloved Dalmation 'Blemie': 'I have little in the way of material things to leave. Dogs are wiser than men. They do not set great store upon things. They do not waste their days hoarding property. They do not ruin their sleep worrying about how to keep the objects they have, and to obtain the objects they have not. There is nothing of value I have to bequeath except my love and my faith. These I leave to all those who have loved me....' 9.Typescript, fragment of a poem, '[Since] you and I, dear friend, must part,' 1 p, 8vo, n.p., n.d., loss at upper left corner affecting 5 lines of text. 'Night bids me go, I cannot stay / With love for you upon my mind / You can in this a hidden question find.' Plus a bawdy limerick in Carlotta's hand, a selection of letters to Jane and Myrtle Caldwell, and newspaper clippings regarding O'Neill.
