FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST HARRY POTTER BOOK. ROWLING, J.K. B. 1965. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. London: Bloomsbury, 1997. 8vo. Publisher's illustrated paper boards by Thomas Taylor, bespoke red morocco-backed solander box, lined in velvet, by The Chelsea Bindery. Some wear to joints, pages lightly toned, as usual. Provenance: 'Mr. Selwood' (neat signature to upper corner of paste-down) FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING, OF THE BOOK THAT GAVE LIFE TO THE BELOVED WIZARD OF HOGWARTS, produced in a small edition of 500 copies, mostly intended for libraries. Based on a strong recommendation from his 8-year old daughter, Nigel Newton secured Rowling's manuscript for Bloomsbury with a Ā£2,500 advance. The book has now sold more than 120 million copies, and more importantly created a cultural phenomenon that continues today.
