A George III mahogany Pembroke table Circa 1760 With one oak lined frieze drawer enclosing a divided interior incorporating three open compartments, on angled square section tapering legs terminating in guttae carved block feet and iron castors, the mounts apparently original, unextended approximately: 57cm wide x 90cm deep x 71cm high, (22in wide x 35in deep x 27 1/2in high) Footnotes: A similar Pembroke table to the offered lot sold Christie's, London, 6 April 2000, Important English Furniture, lot 265 whilst a further related model sold Sotheby's, New York, 2015, Private Collections, lot 60. The renowned cabinet making partnership of Vile (1740-1767) and Cobb (1715-1778) adopted guttae feet, as seen on the present table, for a set of stools which they supplied for the Vyne, Hampshire in 1753. Various subsequent pieces (and not exclusively seat furniture) were made during the period 1755-1765 and the majority of these seem to have some kind of association either to just Vile or to the revered Vile and Cobb partnership. However, arguably among the most notable examples which incorporate these distinctive guttae feet, are a suite of drawing room furniture which were provided to St. Giles's House, Dorset in circa 1760 upon behalf of Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 4th Earl of Shaftesbury (d.1771).
