PAUL HUET (French, 1803-1869) Le Château de Coucy, circa 1822 stamp of the Atelier and inscribed 'Coucy' (lower right); identified on a typed label (affixed to the backing paper); identified on a presentation plaque watercolor on thick wove paper sheet size 26.0 x 47.0 cm (10 3/16 x 18 1/2 in). framed 46.5 x 65.5 x 3.0 cm (18 5/16 x 25 13/16 x 1 9/16 in). Footnotes: Provenance The artist's family. André Candillier, Paris, France. The collection of Eric van Rooy (acquired from the previous, 2006). Exhibited Paris, Musée Eugène-Delacroix, 1974. Paris, Galerie Heim. N.B. The Château de Coucy was built in the 1220s by Eguerrand III, Lord of Coucy, during the rule of King Philip II of France. During WWI, the castle served as a German military outpost, and upon the retreat of German troops in 1917, the castle was destroyed on the orders of German General Erich Ludendorff. The only remaining feature of the castle is its keep, which upon construction was the largest in Europe.
