Attributed to Salomon Rombouts (Dutch, circa 1652-circa 1702) The Inattentive Watchmen unsigned; attributed to Gillis Rombouts on a presentation plaque; fragmentary wax seal with a family crest (on the reverse) oil on panel 40.0 x 55.5 cm (15 3/4 x 21 7/8 in). framed 57.3 x 73.0 x 5.0 cm (22 1/2 x 29 1/8 x 2 in). Footnotes: Provenance With G. Cramer and Hoogsteder, The Hague (by 1968). Nadeau's, Windsor, Connecticut, New Year's Day Auction, January 1, 2019, lot 193. A Newport, Rhode Island, estate (acquired from the previous). N.B. This work has been examined via digital images by the Netherlands Institute for Art History (RKD). It has formerly been attributed to both Egbert Lievensz. van der Poel (1621-1664) and to Gillis Rombouts (1630-1672), but the most recent examination by the RKD has led to the attribution to Salomon Rombouts, the son of Gillis.
