An important and very fine French Empire clock, ormolu and red griotte marbre. Portraying Love and Psyche, the bronze sculpture inspired by the famous group of the same name by the great Italian neoclassical sculptor Antonio Canova (1757-1822), now kept at the Ermitage Museum, in St. Petersburg. The finely sculpted bodies are standing on a pedestal of French rouge griotte marbre, finely enriched by ormolu friezes, with garlands and other classical motifs. The dial is ormolu, too, finely engine-turned and has Roman numerals. Hands are in Breguet style. The movement strikes hours and half hours. The size and quality of this clock, as well as its overall beauty and aesthetical equilibrium, allow it to be defined as a museum quality item. H 71 cm
