Kaiser Leon (457-474) ließ hinter den Stadtmauern über einer mit Steinen eingefassten Quelle die Kirche "Zoodochos Pege" errichten. Etwa einhundert Jahre später wurde der Bau von Kaiser Justinian I. (527-565), der vom Heilwasser getrunken hatte und von einer Krankheit geheilt wurde, erweitert. Nach der Eroberung Konstantinopels im Jahre 1453 durch die Osmanen geriet der Wallfahrtsort in Vergessenheit.
