TWO BOYS SYMBOLIZING GOOD FORTUNE
Yellow bronze. China, late Qing – approx. Republic
These two nicely rendered boys are in Yin-Ying position. It is quite a sophisticated composition, for every boy has two bodies, which combine to form a ring with an opening in the centre. The overall shape of the four bodies tends towards a quadrilateral – this number is a symbol of lucky in China. The boys are depicted naked, wearing only a decorated band around their abdomens; one of them holding a leaf fan, and the other a small bowl. Distinctive are the tufts of hair, which have been left uncut, so that the house-god could pull them to safety in case of a fire. Dark patina.

Diese beiden nett ausgeführten "Glücksknaben" sind in Yin-Yang-Stellung. Die Komposition ist raffiniert gemacht, denn jeder Knabe hat zwei Körper und diese bilden einen durchgehenden Ring mit Öffnung im Zentrum. Somit ist mit vier Körpern ein annäherndes Viereck gebildet, diese Zahl ist ein Glückssymbol in China. Die Knaben sind nackt und tragen nur um den Bauch ein dekoriertes Band. Einer hält einen Blattfächer, der andere eine kleine Schale. Bezeichnend die Haarbüschel, die belassen wurden, damit der Hausgott sie bei Brand an diesen hervorziehen konnte. Dunkle Patina.
