RITUAL CROWN OF A LAMA
Color on textile on papier mâché, leather. Tibet, 15th cent.
Crown in form of a five-leaved Tathagata crown, worn for ceremonial events. Lightly conical, in upper area five-fold overlapping picture boards which - with the exception of one - each present a larger circular depiction of a deity in the center, below four smaller, at the top another without border. Also animals are portrayed. Due to age, corrosion and patina, details are not recognizable. The fifth leaf offers only one deity in lapped border. Pure decoration is composed in light relief, the same on four crown sections, stronger on the fifth and with flame motifs. The lower border with leather. Interesting and mystical effect of patina, some damage due to obvious age characteristics (loosely mounted on fitting masonite board).

Die Krone in Form einer fünfblättrigen Tathagata-Krone, die zu zeremonialen Anlässen getragen wurde. Die leicht konisch sich weitenden, im oberen Teil fünffach gelappten Bildtafeln tragen - ausgenommen eine - jeweils im Zentrum eine größere, kreisrund gefaßte Darstellung einer Gottheit, darunter vier kleine, zuoberst eine weitere ohne Umrandung. Auch Tiere kommen vor. Aufgrund von Alter, Verwitterung und Patina sind nähere Einzelheiten nicht mehr zu erkennen. Das fünfte Blatt bietet nur eine Gottheit in gelappter Umrandung. Das rein Dekorative ist mit leichtem Relief ausgeführt, auf den vier Kronenteilen jeweils gleich, am fünften Blatt im Relief stärker und mit flammenden Motiven. Die untere Randfassung mit Leder. So manche Schäden, aber aufgrund der deutlichen Alterungsmerkmale und der Patina wiederum auch interessant und mit mystischer Wirkung (lose montiert auf formal einer angepaßten Hartfaserplatte).
