SHIGENAO: TIGER
Netsuke, Wood. Japan, 19th cent.
The head of the tiger is large with an almost human expression. He is sitting and either roaring or hissing, has a bulky body with very complex fur patterns, a perfect study, almost as if it was painted on. Particularly appealing is the way that the fur steadily runs down his back in the direction of the tail, while it appears to be blown by the wind in the area around his head. The eyes are inlaid with yellow horn and the signature SHIGE-NAO is engraved in one of his thighs, hidden within the fur structure. A natural Himotoshi. This skilled artist probably belonged to the Shigemasa circle.
HEIGHT 3,25 CM, LENGTH 3,8 CM
From a Viennese collection

SHIGENAO: TIGER
Netsuke, Holz.
