STEHENDE GOTTHEIT SHIVARötlicher Sandstein. Indien,Madhyapradesh oder Rajasthan, ca. 11. bis 12. Jh.Eine beeindruckende größere Skulptur eines vierarmigen Gottes Shiva, der in leicht femininer Tribhanga steht, ein Fuß ist nach außen gedreht. Da einige Teile der Darstellung verloren gegangen sind, ist die Ikonografie ungewiß. Der emporgehaltene Stab ist sicher ein Dreizack gewesen und das Wassergefäß, das in der Hand darunter gehalten wird, deutet darauf hin, daß dieses Bildnis einst Shiva mit der Flußgöttin Ganga (die sich klein links oben befunden haben dürfte) dargestellt hat. Shiva verhinderte eine Flut, war aber zugleich von der erotischen Ausstrahlung der Ganga überwältigt und seine Gattin Parvati zu Eifersucht veranlaßt. Die Skulptur zeigt Shiva mit gut gearbeiteten Gesichtszügen, hoher Krone (auf der sich symbolisch das Dritte Auge befindet), mit Schmuckketten behangen und nur einem dünnen seidenen Dhoti bekleidet. The iconography is not entirely clear, as several parts of the depiction are missing. The rod held frontally was quite certainly a trident and the water vessel held in the hand below suggest that this was once a portrayal of Shiva with the river goddess Ganga (who could possibly have been present as a small depiction on the upper left). Shiva prevented a flood, but at the same time became subdued by the erotic emanation of Ganga and compelled his consort Parvati to jealousy. The sculpture shows Shiva with fine facial features, a tall crown (holding a symbolic third-eye), bejewelled with chains and clad in a fine silk dhoti.
