A RARE GUYUE XUAN 'GRASSHOPPER' ENAMELED WHITE GLASS SNUFF BOTTLE Opaque white glass, with design in painted multicolor enamels. China, ca. 1775-1795 IMPERIAL, ATTRIBUTED TO YANGZHOU, QIANLONG FOUR-CHARACTER MARK IN IRON-RED FOUR CHARACTER SEAL SCRIPT ON THE BASE AND OF THE PERIOD. Delicately painted with a grasshopper seated on one of a cluster of pinks growing next to several other blue and yellow flowers, surrounded by long leaves arching over onto the other side where four butterflies hover above a group of smaller flowers. Hugh M. Moss comments a similar design on another Guyue Xuan bottle attributed to Yangzhou as follows: ‘The style of painting is quite different from most of the court wares, and the enamels were used in a thinner, more painterly manner than most of their Beijing counterparts. When the Qianlong reign mark was used at Yangzhou it was always a four-character, seal-script version, usually written in a single, horizontal line although some are four-square.’Shape: Flattened heart form with broad shouldersHollowing: StandardMouth, neck and lip: Elongated cylindric neck, narrow mouthBase: Raised oval flat baseStopper: Tourmaline cabochon mounted in cast bronze with décor borders in high reliefHeight of the bottle with stopper: 6.7 cmWidth of the mouth: 14 mmWidth of the neck: 6 mmCondition: Excellent, the colors vivid and intensive, the white glass with very minor firing imperfections and wearProvenance: British private collectionLiterature comparison: The Meriem Collection of Important Chinese Snuff Bottles, Christie’s, September 19 2007, New York, lot 610.
