A PLAIN WHITE JADE SNUFF BOTTLE, QING DYNASTY, 18TH/19TH CENTURY Plain white nephrite with tiny flecks of chalkier white, smooth surface . China, 18th/19th centuryAn almost identical bottle (see literature comparison below) has been described as follows: “This bottle has a relatively deep foot area for a bottle hollowed so well, suggesting that it may have been designed with the knowledge that it would be displayed in a palace, where stability would be an asset. The formal integrity, detailing, and finish of this bottle match the extraordinary feat of hollowing; the broader-than-usual oval combined with the broad, widely flared neck make it an unusual and powerful shape for a plain jade snuff bottle.”Shape: Flattened almost round formHollowing: Remarkably well hollowed, hence almost transparent in some areas (the spoon can be seen from the outside) – slightly reminiscent of the Hindustan-style jadesMouth, neck and lip: Small mouth, elegantly flaredBase: Oval, deeply convex to the insideStopper: Glass in imitation of carnelianHeight of the bottle with stopper: 6.1 cmWidth of the mouth: 5 mmWidth of the neck: 16 mmCondition: PerfectProvenance: Austrian private collectionLiterature comparison: Snuff Bottles from the Mary and George Bloch Collection: Part X.
