[HEAD (FRANCIS BOND)] Bubbles from the Brunnens of Nassau, FIRST EDITION, half-title, frontispiece and 9 lithographed plates 'drawn by Bruges' patent Paneidolon' on India paper, bookplate of Matilda Ellen Slade, contemporary calf gilt, upper joint weakening, John Murray, 1834; Idem, second edition, engraved frontispiece, engraved additional pictorial title-page, publisher's pictorial cloth, soiled, John Murray, 1834--HUGO (VICTOR) The Last Days of a Condemned... with Observations on Capital Punishment, by Sir P. Hesketh Fleetwood, 3 copies, variant coloured cloths, each blind-stamped with variant ecclesiastical design on covers, Smith, Elder, 1840--[ARABIAN NIGHTS] The Arabian Nights' Entertainments; or, the Thousand and One Nights... New Edition, 3 vol., translated by E.W. Lane, titles printed in blue and red, illustrations, publisher's cloth-backed decorative colour-printed boards, g.e., slight rubbing and toning, John Murray, 1850, 8vo (8) Footnotes: 'By 1834 the battle was won, and it was then that the first fully cloth-bound book appeared which featured pictorial covers. This was a landmark in book design, and must have caused a considerable stir in the publishing world. The idea seems to have been the brain-child of the author, the eccentric Sir Francis Bond Head (1793-1875). Bubbles from the Brunnens of Nassau was published by John Murray in 1834... [and] the tipped-in plates of the first edition were described as having been drawn by Burges's patent Paneidolon.' (Eric Quayle, The Collector's Book of Books, 1971). The first edition sold out, as did the second edition published the same year.
