VIGERS, including an illustration of three parrots and flowers on the title-page; a bird nesting amongst flowers on the verso; opening text leaf with wide border of flowers, a bird and helmet with an owl perched on opening initial 'G' in liquid gold; vignette on colophon of a toucan and flowers; illuminated initials, floral decorations and rubrication marks throughout, signed 'A.V.F 1903' on colophon, brown crushed morocco gilt BY COBDEN-SANDERSON AT THE DOVES PRESS BINDERY (signed 'The Doves Bindery. VIGERS - IN A BINDING BY COBDEN-SANDERSON FOR THE DOVES BINDERY. Allan Francis Vigers (1858-1921) trained as an architect, but was best known (like William Morris) as a designer of textiles, furniture and especially wallpaper for the likes of Jeffrey & Co. and Liberty. He joined the Art Workers Guild in 1903, and exhibited at the Royal Academy and at the Arts and Crafts Exhibition in 1910.'The architect Allan Francis Vigers took a highly individualistic approach to pattern design, informed by his skills as an illuminator... He specialized in intricate florals, composed of a mass of small flower heads, mounted like jewels on white or dark-blue backgrounds. At once naturalistic and highly artificial, his patterns featured typical English garden flowers... simply and accurately depicted, but arranged in consciously artful synchronized formations' (Lesley Jackson, Twentieth Century Pattern Design, Princeton, 2002). Provenance: Pamela and Raymond Lister, bookplate. Saleroom notices: To clarify, the description should read 'Designed by Cobden-Sanderson for the Doves Bindery'.
