COTTONIAN BINDING - ROBERT SOUTHEY [UNDERWOOD (J.R., editor)] A Narrative of Memorable Events in Paris, Preceding the Capitulation, and During the Occupancy of that City by the Allied Armies, in the Year 1814... the Journal of a Detentu... also anecdotes of Buonaparte's Journey to Elba, ROBERT SOUTHEY'S COPY, INSCRIBED TO HIM BY THE EDITOR ('To Robert Southey from the Editor' on the front free endpaper, additionally inscribed by Southey providing the editor's name, and with note 'Robert Southey, London 19 July 1828 from the Author' on the title-page, half-title, blue striped cloth over boards, spine worn, preserved in later solander box, 8vo, for the Editor, 1828 Footnotes: Editor's presentation copy to poet laureate Robert Southey, bound in a 'Cottonian' binding of blue fabric. Southey's 'Cottonian' library was created by having his cheaper or worn books bound in coloured cotton materials, as used by his daughters and their friends who helped in the making of the bindings. His library had at least 1,200 volumes bound in this manner, but most it seems were rebound by later owners unaware of their historical significance.
