A pair of George III silver Neo Classical condiment vases William Holmes, London 1792 Vase form bodies with applied upper band of husks, below the sides with floral garlands in relief issuing from bow tied ribbons, scroll band below and with a broad band of stiff leaves to the lower bodies, a similar band of leaves to the stem on a square pedestal foot, the unusual hinged high domed covers further embellished with a band of stiff leaves, below a small dome surmounted with a cast foliate finial, each engraved to the body and covers with a crest, possibly a bear/lion's gamb holding a branch fructed, interior gilt, height 19cm, weight 29.7oz. (2) Footnotes: Provenance: With Mary Cooke Antiques Limited 2015 The Patrick and Mavis Walker Silver Collection With variations in the engraving there are possibly two most likely family options. The SHERRIFF family of Bogbye (re: Burke's General Armory but otherwise unidentified), Warwicks. Their blazon identifies the gamb holding a branch of dates, the fruit in pods. Secondly The COWPER family, who in 1706 were created Barons Cowper of Wingham, Kent and in 1718 Earls Cowper and Viscounts Fordwich of Kent. Their blazon identifies the gamb holding a cherry branch. A possible third but more unlikely option is the BUNHILL family. Their crest identifies the gamb as of a bear holding a rose fructed and leaved.
