The crest could be that intended for use by the family of Sir John TRAFFORD (1752-1815) of Croston who in 1773 married Elizabeth TEMPEST (1750-1813) daughter of Stephen Walter TEMPEST of Broughton, Yorkshire. Sir John TRAFFORD was the son and heir of Sir Humphrey TRAFFORD (1698-1773) also of Colston by Frances DALTON (1717-1777). It is also possible that the crest could be that used by Trafford LEIGH Esq. (1770-1859) of Oughrington Hall, Lymm, Cheshire son and heir of John Burridge LEIGH Esq (1731-1806) by Susannah TRAFFORD (1735-1804) daughter and heir of Edward TRAFFORD Esq. of Liverpool, who is descended from the TRAFFORD family of Swithamley Hall, Leek Staffordshire.
