Engraved portrait frontispiece, title within woodcut architectural border, without initial blank. Modern half-morocco over marbled boards. Provenance: 'e.f.' (initials to title page). FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE of Bacon's influential history. Written after Bacon's fall from power during the reign of James I, the style is 'distinctive among English historians in emphasizing psychology as a key to understanding both the nature of man and political action...'
