"Holy Family with Saint Elizabeth and Saint John the Baptist".
Oil on copper.
It presents repainting and restorations.
Measurements: 10 x 10 cm.
In this tondo the author collects an intimate image in which he presents the Virgin with son and the mother of the Virgin, Saint Ana holding with her arms the Saint Juanito who holds between his hands a cross, to which the Baby Jesus approaches, in an innocent and childish gesture. Despite the fact that these are nimbed religious figures, the image is presented to the viewer in a natural, everyday manner, resembling that of an ordinary family. In such a way that it awakens a certain closeness and recognition in the viewer, since religion is shown in a friendly and natural way.
It is therefore the theme of the extended Holy Family; this iconography includes, in its most common sense, the closest relatives of the Child Jesus, i.e. mother and grandmother or mother and nurturing father. Thus it is usually a group of three figures, whether Saint Anne or Saint Joseph. Here, on the other hand, the composition is enriched, revealing a structural complexity and dynamism that are clearly Mannerist, combined with a theatricality and eloquence in the gestures that, despite being totally Mannerist, heralds the future development of the Baroque. We see the Child with his mother, his nurturing father and his grandmother, as well as Saint Elizabeth, the Virgin's cousin, and her son Saint John the Baptist. To complete the scene, the figure of the angel is clearly immersed in the earthly composition, emphasising the sacred character of the representation.
