"Saint Matthew".
High relief in carved and polychrome wood. Vitreous paste.
The fingers have been restored and the carving is worn.
It has xylophagous remains.
Measurements: 50 x 39 x 15 cm; 28 x 20 x 9 cm (saint).
High relief sculpture showing the figure of a saint inscribed inside an oval frame, richly carved. Inside is the three-dimensional figure of the Evangelist Saint Matthew, although it should be noted that he is not accompanied by the winged man that identifies him in the Tetramorphos, alluding to his Gospel: a text that aims above all to characterise Christ as King of the Jews and as the Messiah prophesied in the Scriptures, emphasising his life as a man. St. Matthew the Evangelist was one of the twelve apostles chosen by Jesus, and the author according to Christian tradition of the Gospel that bears his name. He is mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles, and also in the Gospel of Luke, under the name of Levi. Matthew is identified with a winged man or angel, a symbol of the tetramorph of the prophet Ezekiel. This association is due to the fact that his Gospel begins by reviewing the genealogy of Christ, the Son of Man and also the Son of God.
