Barcelona
Italian school; possibly Naples, 18th century.
"Infant Jesus".
Polychrome terracotta and vitreous paste.
It shows repainting and restorations.
It has consolidation in the head, feet, arms and fingers.
Measurements: 28 x 15,5 x 11 cm.
Image worked in wood in round bulk, of great carving quality, delicately polychromed with great naturalism. It represents the Child Jesus naked, given that he was originally dressed in rich royal clothes, made especially for this purpose. Jesus is shown lying down, with his legs slightly apart, his face raised towards the sky, his left hand extended and his right hand raised as a sign of blessing. The quality of the work on the face is particularly noteworthy, as it is highly emotive, delicate and tender and at the same time suffering, reflecting the innocent child's awareness of his dramatic destiny. The realism and expressiveness are enhanced by the large eyes, with wide-open irises and a painful frown, and also by the half-open mouth, which shows the upper teeth.
Given the importance given to religious images in the Hispanic world, during the 17th and 18th centuries ambitious pictorial series and extensive iconographic programmes were created for churches and convents, as well as printed prints, medals and reliquaries for private devotion. As a whole, regardless of their size or medium, these images fulfilled the aim of sacralising everyday life beyond the altars. The Granada school stood out during this period, receiving and developing the stylistic patterns of the Baroque period. This is a type of sculpture for dress, which are figures worked in detail, especially on the face and hands. These sculptures were particularly appreciated for their naturalism, as the fact that they were wearing real clothes gave them a greater degree of realism than those that were simply carved, which were often not of sufficient quality to achieve the degree of naturalism that had been sought after in religious art since the Baroque period.
