A pair of early George III silver serving dishes Thomas Heming, London 1761 Shaped-oval form, the gadroon rim interspersed with foliate and scroll motifs, the centre with engraved armorial of a Lady surrounded by a cartouche of foliate sprays and shell motifs, underside of bases with scratch weights '27'7' and '27=11', length 32.5cm, weight 49.9oz. (1745?-1830?) of Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire and Anna COLLET (born 1745). The presentation as a lozenge leads us to expect that they were for the use of Anna CLIFFE nee COLLET. William CLIFFE appears to be the only child of Robert CLIFFE (born 1713) of Mathon, Herefordshire and grandson of Allen CLIFFE (1685-1758) of Witley, Salop and Mathon. His great-grandfather Allen CLIFFE was in 1691 Sherrif of Worcester. William CLIFFE is believed to have been buried in 1830 at Shrawley, Worcestershire. Thomas Heming was appointed Principal Goldsmith to King George III in 1760 and was the first working goldsmith to hold this post since the early seventeenth century.
