PAINT-DECORATED BANNISTER BACK SIDE CHAIR New England, 18th century, pediment crest joined to ball- and baluster-turned continuous stiles flanking four split-baluster splats with conforming profile, a later over-upholstered seat in trapezoidal frame is intersected by forelegs jointed to rear with double stretchers and a front rail centering double-ball turned molding, the wood painted dark blue or black with gold, yellow, and red-painted details, contrasting with later red ground used for spindles and front rail, painted and collaged motifs include a grotesque mask emblem in center of crest, acrobat figures, and harpies, (loss to height, imperfections, 19th century paint), 48cm wide, 43cm deep, 99cm high (19 3/4in wide, 17in deep, 39 1/4in high). Seat ht. 16 in. Footnotes: OVERALL CONDITION: Good. Wear appropriate for age. Later paint, cut down legs, and paint loss throughout.
