Roberts's series of lithographs were issued in 41 parts and in three states. Roberts began preparation for the lithographic sketches in 1838, and over the next couple of years he traveled to Alexandria, Cairo, the Sinai, the Holy Land, Jordan, and Lebanon, all the while taking detailed and delicate sketches of his experiences. Upon his return, Roberts began working with lithographer Louis Haghe. The 250 resulting lithographs were originally printed in two separate volumes between 1842 and 1849, The Holy Land and Egypt and Nubia, and then compiled into one 6-volume work titled The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, and Nubia. The work was called by historian John Roland Abbey (1894-1969) 'one of the most important and elaborate ventures of nineteenth-century publishing, and [...] the apotheosis of the tinted lithograph' (Travel in Aquatint and Lithography, 1770-1860). OVERALL CONDITION: Good. Wear appropriate for age. Toning and minor foxing throughout. Not examined out of frame.
