LOGGAN (DAVID) Cantabrigia illustrata sive omnium celeberrimae istius Universitatis collegiorum, aularum, bibliothecae academicae... nec non totius oppidi Ichnographia, FIRST EDITION, engraved throughout, comprising a mezzotint portrait of Charles Seymour, 5th Duke of Somerset by J. Smith after John Riley, pictorial title with view of Cambridge in the distance, dedication to William and Mary, address to the reader, index leaf, double-page map, and 29 fine double-page views (4 folding), title browned, occasional light browning and staining elsewhere, some small scattered ink flecks (mostly in the margins but occasionally within the image), one or two short tears to the central fold at the foot of the plate, large folding plate of Trinity College with neat repair to verso and small tear at fold point, contemporary red morocco gilt, sides with outer and inner rule border enclosing central panel with roll-tool border and floral corner-pieces, spine with 6 ornate gilt tooled compartments, the seventh lettered in gilt, g.e., a couple of scuffs neatly repaired, 2 or 3 spots [Wing L2837], folio (453 x 305mm.), Cambridge, [1690] Footnotes: LOGGAN'S VERY SCARCE AND ATTRACTIVE WORK ILLUSTRATING THE CAMBRIDGE COLLEGES - IN A FINE CONTEMPORARY BINDING. Loggan's much less scarce companion work, Oxonia illustrata, had been published in 1675 when he was working as 'public sculptor' to the University of Oxford. A year later he began work on the present work, which was finally completed in 1690 whereupon Loggan was made engraver to Cambridge University. In addition to the views of the Cambridge colleges, it includes one of Eton, and a fine double-page map of Cambridge. Provenance: Anthony Grey, 11th Earl of Kent (1645-1702, admitted to Trinity College Cambridge, 1658), bookplate; Thomas Philip de Grey, 2nd Earl Grey, of Wrest Park (1781-1859), bookplate; 'Bought of Bain March 1923', pencil note on front free endpaper.
