CORMAC MCCARTHY'S AIR FORCE UNIFORM SHIRT. A U.S. Air Force enlisted man's uniform shirt from his time in the Air Force, early 1950s, in summer weight khaki polyester/viscose blend by Elbeco, without size designation, flap pockets, epaulets, stitched grommets for insignia above left breast pocket, satin-lined neck band. Light wear, scattered staining. Provenance: Cormac McCarthy; Annie DeLisle. Cormac McCarthy left the University of Tennessee in 1953 to join the U.S. Air Force. Stationed in Alaska, he began to read books voraciously, 'I read a lot of books very quickly,' he has noted. This habit was essential to his development as a writer as McCarthy himself has famously observed, 'The ugly fact is books are made out of books... The novel depends for its life on the novels that have been written.' Upon his return to the University of Tennessee in 1957, he published his first stories, before dropping out again in order to pursue his writing more seriously.
