Important signed icon of the Mother of God with Silver oklad, Russia, dated 1717, silver
(1280g), St. Petersburg, around 1717, master's mark in Cyrillic letters: MP, 55,7 x 46 cm
// The inscription below reads: This icon was painted by Lavrentij Tufanov in 1717 after
the model of the icon in the Elias street of the town Veliky Novgorod. The inscription on
the oklad has some spelling mistakes, also the year is wrongly indicated with 1713. In
addition, the glass rectangles with the gold letters are inserted the wrong way round on
the side of the head of the Mother of God. However, this is probably one of the earliest
documented silversmith's works from St. Petersburg, which was founded 1703. About the

Grosse signierte Ikone der Gottesmutter des Zeichens mit Silberoklad
Russland, datiert 1717
Silber (1280g), St. Petersburg, um 1717
Meistermarke in kyrillischen Lettern: MP
55,7 x 46 cm
