PHOTO ALBUM containing photographs of Egypt, mostly of building the first Egyptian oil refinery and storage activities, presumably near Ras Gemsah. c. 1911/1913. W. tog. 83 photographs: 17 fine general 'touristic' albumen photographs (each 210 x 270 mm) of Cairo and surroundings, captioned in italics and numbered in the image, and 66 private albumen photographs (220 x 280 mm each) of installations and building activities, of which 2 fold. panorama photographs, all mounted on thick cardboard lvs. Fol.-obl. Cont. simili reptile skin print cl., on front side: "Egypte". NOTE: The 'Anglo-Egyptian Oilfields Ltd', the activities of which this album is a testimony, was an oil company that was registered in London on 6 July 1911 based on oilfields in Egypt. The company was a joint operation of Royal Dutch Shell and British Petroleum with the objective of receiving concessions, developing, drilling, purifying, supplying, reserving, distributing and handling petroleum products. Ras Gemsah became a very important source of oil, and in 1911, the first oil refinery was established there of which this album testifies. The refinery’s first operations commenced in 1912; the first tank steamer carrying 3000 tons of oil moved from Ras Gemsah headed to the Far East, which was considered the only origin for oil production for quite some time. One of the photographs depicts a festive 'reception' where the English, the Egyptian and the Dutch flag can be detected. One of the photographs dated '8 September 1913' with pencil. - A ticket on the upper paste down reveals that the album was bound by '(Hof- en Nederlandsche Albumfabriek en Hofboekbinderij) R.W. Rinck Den Haag', at the time a prestigious bindery.
