Umfangreicher Brief an einen Freund, den Drehbuchautor und 1936er Oscar-Preisträger Dudley Nichols, dem er sein Leid klagt über den Verlust seiner Lieblingskatzen und über die nicht enden wollende Suche nach einem geeigneten Haus in den USA. "... Pam and I have lost the second of our two favorite cats (the black one) & we are feeling miserably depressed. We regret having left England but don't propose to return there because we would so hate to go back to our house without these two cats & having visited America for the mere enjoyment of a stage flop. Similarily we are depressed by a seemingly endless series of rented houses, packing & unpacking, never knowing where to find one's collar studs and carbon paper, & always surrounded by the local teenage yokels. (The present house has a much smaller yard than the Greenwich one) ... So we want to find a house to rent, just outside California, Arizona or Nevada preferred. Unfortunately though completely isolated the house should be within reasonable distance of a township with a shopping centre, movie house & gin mill for the sake of the staff ... I know that Arizona is said to be so dry that it is virtually impossible for one to putrify. That sounds good. Nevada they say tends towards mountains. That is more questionable. Did someone say that there are no snakes in Arizona? ... Our protected film will have to be made in Hollywood instead of New York. This is a pity for the subject lent itself to N.Y. production & would doubtless have furred out better made there. For we planned to shoot almost a third of the picture (mostly interiors) on actual locations.
