Jamini Roy (1887-1972) Untitled (Village Scene) signed 'Jamini Roy' in Bengali lower right tempera on jute pasted on card 41 x 56cm (16 1/8 x 22 1/16in). Footnotes: Provenance Property from a private collection, UK. Acquired in India in the 40s; Thence by descent. Roy is renowned for his iconic depictions of rural Bengal life and Indian mythology and is primarily celebrated as a painter of folk and traditional art forms, multiple examples of which can be found in this auction. However, his 'rare' and lesser-known but equally captivating landscapes offer a glimpse into a different facet of this prolific artist's oeuvre. His landscapes reveal a deep reverence for the natural world, demonstrating his ability to infuse even the simplest of scenes with his distinctive artistic style and cultural sensibilities. In Untitled (Village Scene) for example, he presents viewers with an intimate connection to nature. Rather than capturing grand vistas or picturesque panoramas, the scene focuses on the simplicity of rural life. This is a village scene and a hut and tree are visible to the right, whilst other huts can be seen towards the left of the composition and on the horizon line. Roy has employed bold black lines, glittering and luminous yellows and oranges to convey the vitality of this scene. The flattened forms and simplified shapes pay homage to traditional Indian art forms, reminiscent of the Kalighat paintings that greatly influenced his early career.
