Jamini Roy (Indian, 1887-1972) Untitled (Bal Krishna & Cow) printed lower right and edition 196/500 lower left serigraph on paper 35.3 x 52cm (13 7/8 x 20 1/2in). Footnotes: Provenance Archer Graphic Studio, Ahmedabad In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna is depicted as the protector of cows. He is said to have a deep affection for cows, and he is often depicted playing his flute surrounded by cows in a pastoral setting. Here, he is depicted as a baby, Bal. The cow represents Mother Earth, as its milk is a source of nourishment for all creatures. Moreover, in Hinduism, the cow further symbolizes wealth and strength.
