POLK TELLS THE GOVERNOR OF ALABAMA THAT ONE OF THE STATE'S CONGRESSMEN HAS DIED. POLK, JAMES K. 1795-1849. Letter Signed ('James K. Polk / Speaker Ho. Rpts') as Speaker of the House of Representatives, to Governor Arthur P. Bagby of Alabama informing him of the death of the Representative Joab Lawler, 1 p, 4to (250 x 192 mm), Washington, May 10, 1838, marked 'duplicate' at upper left corner, light toning and spotting to leaf. In part: 'Sir, / In execution of an Order of the House of Representatives of the United States of this day's date, I have the honor, herewith, to forward to your Excellency a certified copy of a Resolution of that House, notifying that a vacancy has occurred in the representation of the State of Alabama in this House, by the decease of the Hon. Joab Lawler.' Joab Lawler (1796-1838) was a minister who also served in the Alabama State House and Alabama Senate before being elected to Congress in 1834. He died unexpectedly in 1838. Arthur Pendleton Bagby (1794-1858) was a lawyer and planter who served as Alabama's governor from 1837-1841, and later served in the U.S. Senate and as U.S. Minister to Russia in the Taylor/Polk administration.
