A ULYSSES S. GRANT PRESIDENTIAL SERVICE DINNER PLATE. A porcelain plate with gilt rim, cream, gilt and black lined border, hand-painted Great Seal of the United States in red and gold on border, and hand-painted roses and Campanula to center. No marks. Dia: 9 ¼ in / 23.5 cm Provenance: Richards Collection, Collector's Sales and Services, March 27 & 27, 1994. After the furor of the Andrew Johnson impeachment, President Grant and First Lady Julia Dent Grant hoped to reintroduce a culture of hospitality at the White House. Early in the new administration, the couple approached the D.C. merchant J.W. Boteler & Bro. to order china from Haviland & Co in Limoges, France, which arrived in February of 1870 (see whitehousehistory.org/white-house-china-service). Each plate of the new service featured a different hand-painted scene of flowers, fruits or leaves. The present example features a sprig of pink roses adorned by a stalk of a bell-shaped flower that may be campanula.
