The BBC documentary, Royal Family aired on British TV stations on the 21st of June 1969. The idea for the documentary came from the Queen's then Press Secretary, William Heseltine, and was supported by Prince Philip. They hoped that by allowing cameras into the lives of the Royal family, the general public would see that beneath all the pomp and ceremony, they were a real family. In total, the family was filmed for 75 days and the end result, viewed by 40 million people worldwide, was initially deemed a success. However, in 1970 the documentary was banned due to criticism that the mystery of the Royal family had been compromised. In 2011, 90 seconds of the film were released for an exhibit at the National Portrait Gallery, but the rest of the film has not been seen since 1970.
