Original National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences gold-plated gramophone award mounted to a wooden base, posthumous Grammy award presented to Duke Ellington for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Big Band 'Duke Ellington at Fargo 1940 Live' at the 22nd Grammy Awards on February 27, 1980. With a framed drawing on paper in black ink signed 'Ellington' (bottom left) and a printed symphonic orchestration for Black, Brown and Beige with annotations in unknown hand. 4.75 x 4.75 x 6.75 in. Footnotes: Provenance: Gifted to the owner from the Ellington family. Edward Kennedy 'Duke' Ellington (1899–1974) was an influential American pianist and composer, celebrated for his innovative jazz compositions and arrangements. In 1923, he formed the Duke Ellington Orchestra, touring globally and performing hits like 'Mood Indigo' and 'Take the 'A' Train' for 50 years. He is widely recognized as one of the originators of big-band jazz. Ellington challenged racial barriers, employing, and collaborating with African American musicians during a time of segregation. Throughout his illustrious career, Ellington won 13 Grammy Awards, and this is the first to come to market.
