An Egyptian polychrome faience necklace terminal and an Egyptian dark blue faience fragment of a crown New Kingdom, 18th-19th Dynasty, circa 1350-1069 B.C. Terminal: 4.5cm long; Crown: 7.5cm long (2) Footnotes: Provenance: Property from an American deceased estate, acquired between 1970 and 1989, and held in Arizona and New York. Anonymous sale; Bonhams, London, 28 October 2009, lot 60 (part). Property from a Princely Collection, acquired at the above sale. For a similar necklace terminal cf. Egypt's Golden Age: the Art of Living in the New Kingdom 1558-1085 B.C., Boston, 1982, no. 9, p. 41. Such terminals were widely used during the 18th Dynasty and later influenced the design of Greek jewellers. For another, cf. F. Dunn Friedman (ed.), Gifts of the Nile; Ancient Egyptian Faience, London, 1998, p. 87, no. 31; and for a complete faience 'Blue Crown', see p. 82, no. 29. The 'Blue Crowns', also known as the 'khepresh' from composite statues, were common during the reign of Akhenaten. Although the punched decoration has been interpreted as animal hide or motifs on the helmet it is still open to speculation, as the material of real 'blue crowns' is still unknown.
