Seals and Elephant seals were essential as sources of heating and food for the members of the Expedition, but also studied in detail, with skins, samples of parasites and other materials collected. The subjects of 'Greenland Esquimaux Dogs' are Basilisk and Ginger Bitch, two of the fifty Greenland dogs taken on the expedition, and amongst the six that lost their lives alongside Lt. Belgrave Ninnis when his sledge plunged into a glacial crevasse on 14 December 1912.
